What are Dermal Fillers?squire

As we age the underlying tissues of the skin begin to break down often leaving laugh lines, smile lines, crow’s feet and other facial creases where excessive muscle movement occurs. Soft tissue fillers (injectable collagen) can help fill in some of these lines and creases, temporarily restoring a smoother appearance. The fillers are injected beneath the skin and plump up creased areas. They are also used to add a fuller look to the lips. Collagen fillers are designed in the laboratory and are identical to human collagen.

What To Expect From Treatment

Injectable fillers are not permanent and injected material is eventually metabolized by the body. Every patient differs in how quickly the collagen is metabolized and effects may last a few weeks to 9 months. A thin needle is threaded under the skin and the collagen is slowly injected as the needle is withdrawn. This is done several times to get the desired effect.

What Are The Side Effects?

Common side effects include redness, bruising and swelling for 1-5 days after treatment. You may notice some minor discomfort, stinging and throbbing immediately after treatment. Rare complications include allergic reaction (1/15 000), infection, abscesses, cysts, skin peeling, lumpiness and scarring.

Who Cannot Be Treated?

Patients with rash or open wounds in area to be treated. Patients who are pregnant, have bleeding disorders, diabetes, autoimmune conditions (ex lupus), form keloids or cystic acne and allergic to local anesthetic should not be treated.

Does It Hurt?

Most patients require some local anesthetic. You will probably be advised to apply topical anesthetic cream 1 hour before the procedure to the area to be treated. For lips and some sensitive areas a local freezing will be injected by needle. You may feel some minor stinging or pressure as the injection is administered.

What Is The Cost?

Cost depends on the amount of collagen needed to have the desired effect and can range from $ 250 – 900 per treatment.

Spider Leg Veins

What are Spider Veins?

krista

Spider veins are small red or bluish blood vessels found on the legs about the size of a strand of hair. They can be short, unconnected lines or connected in small clusters. Larger dilated purplish or bluish veins may be visible along the skin surface appearing with the spider veins.
Spider veins carry blood, but they are not necessary. If they are unwanted for cosmetic reasons they can be injected which can make them much smaller or disappear. There is a 50-90 % chance for improvement in appearance.

Which Veins Can be Treated?

The small spider veins can be treated with a sclerosing agent. Clients with large blood vessels should have those treated first before the spider veins. Ask us for an appropriate referral.

How are the Spider Veins Treated?

A sclerosing agent called Sclerodex is injected into the veins using a fine needle. The solution irritates the lining of the vessel causing it to stick together and the blood to clot. Over a period of 3-4 weeks, the treated vessels will slowly fade or disappear. Multiple blood vessels are treated in each session. A single blood vessel or cluster may need to be injected more than once a month apart, depending on its size and how easy it is to get into the vessel.
During the treatment you will feel mild stinging and pain at the sites of injection.

What to Expect after Treatment

All clients are asked to walk a good deal for the first few days after treatment so that blood will be pushed through other vessels. The vessels will be bandaged with cotton balls and tape which will be left on for 1-2 hours. For the next couple days the treated veins will be red, raised and tender.

What are the Possible Side effects?

  • Brown lines or spots may develop in the skin surface. These darkened areas are a form of iron that escapes from the blood vessels during treatment. In most cases the brown areas will slowly disappear over several months.
  • Groups of fine red blood vessels near the sites of injection may develop. Most will disappear by themselves or some may need injection treatment.
  • Small painful ulcers (breakdown of the skin) at treatment sites may occur when solution escapes into surrounding skin. Please inform the physician and we will treat appropriately to reduce scarring.
  • Bruises at the sites of injection are common and will disappear in a few days to weeks.
  • Inflammation or infection of the treated blood vessels is unusual. Please inform the physician and they will be treated with anti-inflamatories and/or antibiotics.
  • Lumps in the injected vessels may develop. This is clotted blood and will slowly disappear over weeks.

How Successful is Treatment?

Most patients will see 50-90 % reduction in spider veins. The process is gradual. New veins may appear in same or different areas over time needing treatment.

Botox

Introduction To Botox

Overuse of facial muscles causes wrinkles and “crushing of the skin” in the forehead, frown area and around the eyes. Botox injections can relax these muscles thereby lessening the appearance of frown lines, laugh lines, forehead creases and crow’s feet.

What is Botox And How Does It Work?

jennaBotox is a protein that is produced by the clostridium botulinum bacteria and has been purified for cosmetic purposes. A small amount of botox is injected right into the muscles that are responsible for creating the wrinkles. By inactivating these muscles the lines disappear or diminish dramatically. Injections give the face a smooth and more relaxed appearance. The procedure is quick and done with very fine needles to give minimal discomfort.

How Long Does It Last?

Results last 3-7 months and then you may return for follow-up treatment. After several treatments the result may last longer.

What Areas Can Be Treated?

Frown lines (between the eyebrows), forehead creases, crows feet, upper lip and marionette lines.

Who Cannot Be Treated?

Patients with neurological disorders like ALS, multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, etc. Patients who are allergic to components in the serum and patients who are pregnant.

What Are The Side Effects?

Side effects are rare and include headache, pinpoint bleeding, bruising, redness and flu-like symptoms. Patients may have a temporary eyebrow or eyelid droop (1/300) which will last the duration of the botox.

What Is The Cost?

The cost depends on the areas being treated and can be anywhere from $200-500 per treatment.

Photofacials

sjIntroduction to Photofacials

Intense pulsed light photorejuvenation systems are designed to combat the effects of the sun and aging in a soft and gentle way. Light energy is delivered through the skin and is picked up by redness and pigment in the face. The light energy is converted to thermal energy and will gradually remove facial redness, pigmented/brown spots, blemishes, facial flushing and spider veins, reduce pore size and soften fine lines. After 1-3 treatments you will notice a more even tone to your skin, less pigmentation and a smoother look and feel. Sunspots will start to fade and fine lines will soften over time. Patients with rosacea will see a reduction in facial redness.  The light system can also safely treat photo-damaged skin on the neck, chest and hands.

Who is a Candidate For Treatment?

The best candidates for treatment are patients with:

  • sun damaged skin (brown spots)
  • flushed faces due to acne and rosacea
  • facial blood vessels
  • irregular skin tone and large pores.

The face, neck, chest, arms, hands and legs can all be treated. Treatment cannot be done around the eyes. Patients with some medical conditions and pregnancy cannot be treated. Patients who have a tan cannot receive treatment until the tan has faded and are strongly advised to protect against the sun after treatment.

What Are Treatments Like?

Treatments are quick and easy.  A cooling gel is placed on the face. A pulsed light hand piece will be moved over the skin emitting a bright light that feels like a gentle “snapping sensation” on the skin. There is minimal discomfort.

What Should I Expect After My Treatment?

Pigmented lesions will darken over the next 1-2 days after treatment and then start to fade over 10-14 days. Vessels will generally undergo immediate graying or blanching and the surrounding skin may redden. The vessels then start to fade over the next 10-14 days. Most patients experience slight temporary redness and “sunburn” type feeling in the affected area after treatment. Very rare side effects include blisters, infection, crusting, undesired pigment changes, scarring and swelling.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The average number of treatments necessary is 5-8, spaced one month apart. The effects of treatment may not be noted until the second or third treatment.

Microdermabrasion

Introduction to Microdermabrasion

amyMicrodermabrasion with our vibraderm machine is a non- invasive skin care device that gently removes the rough top layer of the skin using a vibrating paddle. The skin immediately feels healthier and looks more radiant and polished. As treatments continue other layers of the skin start to improve. This is a painless procedure and there is no downtime. This is good for skin that is aging, congested, flaky, dry, devitalized, blemished and dull to make if more even and rejuvenated. Approximately every 30 days we create a new layer of skin. As new cells form they push their way to the surface and dead cells settle on the surface. This causes enlarged, clogged pores, uneven texture and dull appearance.

What Can Vibradermabrasion Treat?

The device can treat almost any area on the body. The face and neck are the most popular areas,  however the machine can treat backs, chests, feet, hands etc.

Common treatment conditions for vibraderm include:

  • Superficial age spots and skin dullness
  • Superficial acne scars
  • Blackheads and whiteheads
  • Acne prone skin
  • Rough skin any location
  • Dry and oily skin
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sebaceous hyperplasia
  • Pore size formation may diminish.

What Can I Expect After Treatment?

Immediately after treatment the face may be a little red and flushed. This generally lasts about 20 minutes. It is important to not exercise for 24 hours after treatment as you can feel a stinging sensation on the face. Stop Retin A treatments 2-3 days prior and wear sunscreen for 2-3 days post treatment.
The following conditions must be cautious with treatments.
This treatment is progressive and results become noticeable after the third treatment.
History of severe diabetes, severe inflamed acne or rosacea, cold sore infections, illnesses that reduce the immune system such as cancer, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis etc.

How Often Will I Need Treatments?

Treatment numbers will vary. Patients with a lot of acne or rosacea will likely need 3-4 treatments every 2 weeks to see improvements. Patients who are interested in a more refreshed polished look may only need  2 -3 treatments every 2 weeks and then maintenance every 3-4 months or as desired.
